What is an air ambulance?

An air ambulance is a medically staffed and equipped flight that allows patients, who are otherwise unable to travel, quick and long-distance transport via the air.

There are two types of air ambulances:

Fixed-Wing Air Ambulance

  • This includes airplanes such as jets and props
  • Appropriate for long range
  • Better suited for:
    • specialized care
    • medical repatriation (if someone gets hurt while traveling)
    • medical tourism (traveling for care in another country)
  • Referred to as a lifeguard flight in aviation

Rotary Air Ambulance

  • This includes helicopters
  • Appropriate for shorter distances
  • Used for rescues and emergency services, transporting trauma patients to trauma hospitals, etc.
