What is an air ambulance?An air ambulance is a medically staffed and equipped flight that allows patients, who are otherwise unable to travel, quick and long-distance transport via the air.
There are two types of air ambulances:
Fixed-Wing Air Ambulance
- This includes airplanes such as jets and props
- Appropriate for long range
- Better suited for:
- specialized care
- medical repatriation (if someone gets hurt while traveling)
- medical tourism (traveling for care in another country)
- Referred to as a lifeguard flight in aviation
Rotary Air Ambulance
- This includes helicopters
- Appropriate for shorter distances
- Used for rescues and emergency services, transporting trauma patients to trauma hospitals, etc.
